Rural Research Participation

Health research needs to represent everyone—not just people in cities.

When rural communities are left out, research results don’t fully apply to them. This can lead to policies and treatments that don’t meet rural needs, creating unfair gaps in health care.

Challenges facing rural residents joining health studies:

  • Distance and travel
  • Limited local resources e.g. internet
  • Work and privacy concerns

To address this gap, the Rural Research Inclusion Study will talk to rural residents and researchers about their:

  • Experiences
  • Challenges
  • Ideas for improvement

 What’s Next

Through this work, we hope to improve access to participating in research studies for rural community members, which could lead to:

  • Building a BC-wide framework to support rural research
  • Creating regional technology hubs
  • Improving training and data systems
  • Securing sustainable funding

This work is rooted in community engagement and aims to make health research more relevant and equitable for everyone.

If you have lived experience participating in clinical or health services research as a rural resident or have been unable to participate in research due to your geographic location take the survey:
